SOUTH Australians have forfeited almost $25 million to the state's coffers during the past decade.
Analysis of Budget papers since 2002-03 show the government has reaped $24.84 million from forgotten accounts. It only has had to return $4.45 million.

Under the Unclaimed Moneys Act, all amounts exceeding $10 in an account, not accessed for six years, can be taken by Treasury. The money can come from void or unpresented cheques, deposits, refunds, deceased estates, superannuation benefits, wages or salaries. The Government publishes a list of unclaimed monies each January. Rightful owners have two years to claim.

This financial year, the Government has access to $1.88 million. Opposition Leader Isobel Redmond said: "South Australians have a right to this money but it will go straight into the Weatherill Labor Government's pockets if claimants don't get to it first.
Treasurer Jack Snelling said the Government made "all reasonable efforts" to make South Australians aware of unclaimed monies. "If, for whatever reason, money remains unclaimed it returns to the Government to help pay for things such as police officers, doctors, teachers, nurses and child protection workers," he said.

What do you think about the government only giving us 2years to claim on our own money, for it then to be rolled over into government revenue? They say they go to reasonable efforts, what are those reasonable efforts? ummm

Do they have private investigator's looking into these amounts in order to locate the rightful owners? Our guess is NO
Do they look outside there own State in order to find the rightful owners? Our guess is NO
So if you moved States, address, job, changed phone numbers - it would be a case of Too Bad - "but they say they went to reasonable efforts"

Among the largest parcels were $992,750 in a Perth individual's bank account and $718,151 belonging to a Melbourne-based "lost shareholder" of grain seller AWB Ltd, which was taken over last year.

You could be a relative or other type of beneficiary entitled to one of the 975,231 parcels of money.
People can lodge a search for themselves for unclaimed money via Australian Un-Recovered Finance Service's website.

"There is more money in the unclaimed money pool than ever before, so even if you've already searched, you should look again.

The average parcel of money was $652 and last year Australians recovered $62 million.

Those with unclaimed money include:
• people not making a transaction on their cheque or savings accounts for more than seven years;
• those who have stopped making payments on a life insurance policy;
• those who have moved without leaving a forwarding address;
• those who have noticed that regular dividend or interest cheques have stopped coming;
• executors of deceased estates.

Superannuation By law, Companies have to actually transfer your account over as Unclaimed Money, because it’s has become “unclaimed” when.

Your account will be classed as unclaimed money if:

» You reach age 65 and you’re eligible to claim your super or you die;

» We haven’t received any contributions for you for at least 2 years;

» We haven’t been able to contact you for at least 5 years or been able to locate any of your beneficiaries in

the event that you’ve died.

A West Virginian woman received almost $15,000 of unclaimed money her mother had forgotten about on Tuesday.

Vickie Shaluta recieved $14,876.55, the money which her mother who died of Alzheimer's Disease last year had forgotten about. She had the money deposited in a bank.

When Vickie Shaluta's mother died, she thought all that was left behind was handmade quilts and a secret recipe for making the "most amazing fudge." Recently Shaluta was called to tell her that her mother had forgotten about thousands of dollars that were in the bank just "sitting there, growing."

"It's like a gift from mom," Shaluta said of the money. "That's exactly how I feel about it. It's a gift", an ABC news stated.
West Virginia has more pro-active policy in reuniting people with their unclaimed money unlike other states.
